VH1 is planning to countdown the 100 greatest one hit wonders of the 1980s. The show will premier with the first two hours on Tuesday, March 31st and will continue on through Friday, April 3rd.
From VH1’s press release:
“VH1 is inviting viewers to put on their leg warmers, put down that Rubik’s Cube that has yet to be solved, and reminisce to the time when it was all so simple. A time when everyone had “Pac Man Fever” and did the “Safety Dance,” when we played Atari until our fingers fell off, and when it was cool to rock out to hair bands that were the gods of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. VH1 is saluting these one hit wonders of the ’80s, because let’s face it, without them, whose songs would we drunkenly slur during karaoke at the bar?”
Comedian Judah Freidlander will host the five-part special which will feature video clips, footage, and performances from the decade’s best one hit wonders. THey will also have exclusive new interviews with the artists.
One thing I found interesting is that the list of atists mentioned included “A Flock of Seagulls”. I don’t know how you can call them a “One Hit Wonder”. The Seagulls had multiple hits in the early 80s. They had 3 top 30 singles in 82/83. The one that is usually mentioned as their “one hit” is “I Ran”, but they also had hits with “Space Age Love Song” and “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You)” which peaked at 30 and 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
